I’m going door to door… July 14, 2010

This past week my doorbell has rung twice with “door to door” personal calls, the first from a young man carrying literature for a state senate candidate and the other a home repair company representative wanting to assess my home for hail damage (the northwest side of Chicago and fringe north suburbs were pummeled by a hail storm in April ’10-roofers working everywhere).

After speaking with both I had to smile, flashing back to the 60’s when the home doorbell would ring with the Fuller Brush man, Electrolux vacuum representatives, Avon lady and encyclopedia/ magazine sales persons promoting their products.

As a marketing professional I spend many hours each week trying to keep up with new social technology, database driven communications and which media has sufficient “reach” to address a client’s target audience. These folks have reverted back to a marketing method that emerged at the dawn of man-speaking with one another.

Perhaps it’s the times, many businesses have depleted capital and begun reverting to the basics to stay afloat. Or, maybe things have finally come full-circle –  be alert the “doorbell” sound may not be an incoming e-mail but the rarely used button next to your front door.
